Hi Gene. Why are you making up and answering arguments that I never made? If you read what I wrote, I specifically pointed out that I was referring to individuals, not Price’s corporate contributors. There is no point in answering statements and arguments that you conjured up from your imagination.

I will say this though. Dr. Woodbury has a keen interest in protecting the shipyard and keeping it strong and profitable. From the upper management to the lowest worker she is deeply concerned with protecting the people and jobs provided by Northrop Grumman, including your job and your well being. She understands and frequently opines on the essential role the shipyard plays. Not just its vital importance to Newport News and the state of Virginia as its largest employer, but on the key role the shipyard plays in National security and the well-being of the USA. She has a big picture vision of Northrop Grumman and the shipyard and she will fight relentlessly to protect it. To imply otherwise is pretty disingenuous.

On your second point, you are incorrect in your assessment of both the draft Steering Committee list, Woodbury’s campaign and the diverse people in it. When her first campaign finance report comes out you will quickly see that most of her contributors are regular people of all socio-economic levels who contribute modest amounts. Please compare her donors to the high dollar individuals Mr. Price lined up in November.

Contrary to your previous claim that Price’s contributors are “a mixture of many different facets in life.”, I stand by my claim that “I see Mayor Frank’s relatives, partners, associates and some are all of those. I see big developers, bankers, lawyers and lobbyists. I see people who answer to partners and shareholders, not to the citizens of Newport News. I’m not casting aspersions at every entity on Price’s contributor list, but that is the most high powered bunch of financial special interest individuals I have ever seen on one campaign contributor list.”

Before I address your third point, I have a point to make and a question. I always loosely associated the Democratic Party with the interests of the working person and the protector of the people against powerful financial interests whose lobbyists would influence government policy for profit at the expense of the people. I still tend to associate it with conservation, environmental protections and the safeguarding of public health. So what has happened in NN? With the exception of several individuals in your City Committee who I really like and respect, I just don’t see the NN Democrats as playing that role in city politics. When I look at Price’s big money individual contributors list my concern is reinforced. I just fear that the list of big money contributors to Mr. Price will expect something for their support and I doubt it will redound to the benefit of the working man. I hope I am wrong, but my concerns are based on facts and experience. I never thought of the Democratic party as being the party of big money, but in Newport News, especially with the Price campaign, it appears I am wrong. Again, it appears to me that his individual supporters are essentially composed of the “Big Business Overdevelopment Pollution Club”. The very same people, who with Mr. Price, were instrumental in catastrophes like the illegal and unneeded King William Reservoir project. That and other attempts at empire building have left the city in a perilous financial condition and has cost each citizen of Newport News a bundle. Under a Woodbury administration I don’t believe things like that will happen. I see her as the protector of the working person and the businesses that hire them.

On your third point regarding partisanship, you are obviously hyper-partisan and have every right to be that way. It seems your perspective of society and politics is in terms of white and black, good and bad, us against them. You can try to define people the way you want to, but the way you conjure up strawman arguments, red herring arguments and ad hominem attacks in order to justify your personal concept of the scheme of things is unnecessarily divisive. I urge you to look at one of the logical fallacy websites and analyze your arguments to see what I mean. Pat does not subscribe to your hyperpartisan theories and she wants to represent each person in Newport News with equal vigor, regardless of what their party politics is.

You are also welcome to make logically fallacious guilt by association statements such as “I can easily judge Pat by who she chooses to associate, and I know many have extremist viewpoints.” Of course when you can’t back it up with anything but your own opinion and selective reasoning, it rings hollow and shrill.

I must admit that P L Taylor’s comment in an earlier thread “Appears this blog has turned into a Campaign Committee forum rather than an unbiased exchange of ideas.” was more true than I thought. I apologize for my role in that. Like Mr. Taylor, I prefer sunstantive discussions on issues and ideas, preferably backed up with documentation. If only backed up by opinion, it should be labeled as such, in my opinion.

Gene, maybe we can agree on these things. First, both parties have some people of good will who are primarily concerned with the general prosperity and both have people who are primarily concerned with themselves and their own benefit. Second, it is likely that both Dr. Woodbury and Mr. Price are generally people of good character who have spent a good deal of their lives helping others in one way or another. Third, regardless of who wins the Mayor’s race, the other will graciously concede and play the role of the loyal opposition and help the other promote policies that will help the city as a whole. Can we agree on those things?
