Staff members are keeping windows closed and drapes drawn to keep the inside temperature cool. Time outdoors is being limited.

Johnson said she is concerned about seniors not in temperature- controlled accommodations.

"In general, seniors are at a high risk for health problems."

Not only people are at risk of illness or death caused by the heat and poor air quality, said Jennifer Bluhm, inspector with the Bruce-Grey branch of the Ontario Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals.

"Dogs left outside are at an increased risk for heat stroke as well," she said.

Owners should walk and exercise dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, she said, and ensure they have plenty of water.

The biggest risks to a dog's health in this type of weather, she said, are prolonged periods of time outdoors and being left in a vehicle.

"Either one would be very serious," Bluhm said.

Phillips said the hot-weather wave is expected to snap, with a "shock" on Friday when rain and cooler air moves into the area.
