UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBS 2) — He was arrested for protecting his property and family.

But it’s how the Long Island man did it that police say crossed the line.

He got an AK-47 assault rifle, pulled the trigger and he ended up in jail, reports CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman.

George Grier said he had to use his rifle on Sunday night to stop what he thought was going to be an invasion of his Uniondale home by a gang he thought might have been the vicious “MS-13.” He said the whole deal happened as he was about to drive his cousin home.

“I went around and went into the house, ran upstairs and told my wife to call the police. I get the gun and I go outside and I come into the doorway and now, by this time, they are in the driveway, back here near the house. I tell them, you know, ‘Can you please leave?’ Grier said.

Grier said the five men dared him to use the gun; and that their shouts brought another larger group of gang members in front of his house.

“He starts threatening my family, my life. ‘Oh you’re dead. I’m gonna kill your family and your babies. You’re dead.’ So when he says that, 20 others guys...

Exactly when Floyd Mayweather plans on returning to the ring remains a mystery, however, if you’re one of the 703,267 fans that follow him on Twitter, you might have the inside track on where his next fight will take place. During an obvious lull in his rather hectic schedule, Mayweather decided to answer a select series of questions that fans Tweeted to him throughout the day. When one particular follower asked, “when u next in london,” Mayweather took the opporturnity to respond, “Sooner than you think. I’ll keep you posted.”

Given the manner in which Mayweather likes to floss his money as he travels around the world, that could mean anything, so again, another fan would ask, “When are you gonna come do your thing in england?” Mayweather’s response, “Real soon.” Now, obviously we have no idea if he’s dropping a hint about his next fight or simply planning his next vacation, but one has to wonder, if he truly plans on fighting Pacquiao, will he risk stepping into the ring with him next, or will he opt to take a tune-up after another long layoff. If the latter is true, the questi...

tarpon springs florida weather

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

My husband and I decided to take a much needed vacation to Florida and happened to leave on Saturday, the day that Pickens County had its first snowfall…December 5th. We had to load up the car in the snow and cold, where the temperatures were in the 30’s and both of us were so excited to be exiting the cold for a few days!

As we headed south, the temperatures kept rising and we were happily taking off our jackets!

Our first stop was Tarpon Springs, Florida where we met up with some great friends Dan and Melissa. They call Tarpon Springs their home and they showed us a great time – dinner of raw oysters and grilled crab legs at a local place called Crabby Bills and lunch the next day at Mama’s, an authentic Greek Restaurant, at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks!!! How wonderful!

The Sponge Docks, decorated for Christmas, in Tarpon Springs, Florida

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is directed to a solar powered light assembly and in particular to an economical and highly efficient LED lighting system.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Conventional arguments concerning the feasibility of a natural powered electrical system often are thought of in terms of one type of power being selected over another. Hybrid and adaptable systems which adapt to changes in the weather, the typeof climate, and the then current conditions are needed to fulfill the promise of a natural solution to energy needs.

U.S. patent application Ser. No. 12/025,737 entitled "SOLAR-POWERED LIGHT POLE AND LED LIGHT FIXTURE," hereby incorporated by reference, discloses a solar-powered lighting system that includes a flexible, wrap-around, preferably self-stickpanel of photovoltaic laminate applied to the outside surface of a light pole. An LED light fixture is connected preferably at or near the top of the pole and has the same or similar diameter as the pole. The LED light fixture has multiple columns androws of LEDs and an interior axial space for air...

BOSTON - Warm weather has many fruits and vegetables ripening early this year, and on some farms, fall crops will be ready well before Labor Day.

Early apples are already ripe for picking in the Northeast and Midwest. Sweet corn was a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, as were many tomatoes, blueberries and peaches. And, if the warm weather holds, families might have Halloween pumpkins well before October starts.

Major row crops, such as corn and soybeans, also are a little ahead of season, said Julie Schmidt, a statistician with the National Agricultural Statistics Service. A mild winter let farmers plant early, and warm weather since has helped their growth.

"The conditions have been nearly ideal," Schmidt said.

The early harvest is a mixed bag for farmers. Those who sell directly to consumers are most likely to benefit because customers are generally happy to have fruits and vegetables earlier, said Ruth Hazzard, a vegetable specialist at the University of Massachusetts Extension.

But weather-related schedule shifts can cause problems in the wholesale market, where prices are determined by what happens throughout an extende...

This is the conference call for the Dept of Ed's new budget.  Where do I start?  Suffice it to say that I personally believe that the Dept of Education is a leach upon our school systems that takes many tax dollars and throws them away.  For example, it states in this conference call the the District of Columbia's school system is one of the most dangerous and most expensive in the nation with an annual cost of $18,000 per student.  The Sec of Ed, when asked in this call why he was ending the $7,500 program that was extremely successful where parents could pull their children out of school and send them to an excellent educational program at just over 1/3 the cost... he says its not fair that the other 97 students fail and they don't.  I think that's what he said.  Read this actual document and you tell me in the comments below what is going on!...

Culture secretary says DCMS will focus on 'frontline services', claiming move will increase transparency and efficiencyThe Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) would be abolished under new proposals put forward today by the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, to cut the number of public bodies the government funds.A statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) proposed that the MLA – which works to promote best practice in the UK's museums, libraries and archives – would be wound up as the department focused its efforts instead "on front-line, essential services and ensur[ing] greater value for money" in the area. "Government support for museums, libraries and archives will continue," it added. The MLA is just one of 55 public bodies the DCMS funds, many of which are set to be merged, abolished or streamlined as part of the department's plans "to cut costs and increase transparency, accountability and efficiency". The advisory council on libraries is also facing the axe, as is the UK Film Council. The DCMS said some of the key functions carried out by the bodies it proposed abolishing would be transferred to existing organisations.
